Purpose : To evaluate and compare the survival rate of infants admitted to the NICU at Chungbuk National University Hospital during the last 10 years from 1998 through 2007.
Methods : Infants admitted to NICU at Chungbuk National University Hospital from 1998 through 2007 were divided into two groups according to admission time: Period I (1998~2002) and Period II (2003~2007). Clinical data were collected retrospectively and the birth weight- and gestational age-specific distribution and survival rate were compared between 2 periods.
Results : The total numbers of NICU-admitted infants were 2,206 and 2,400 and their overall survival rates were 95.3% and 98.2% in Period I and II, respectively, showing a significant improvement over 2 periods (p<0.0001). In respect to birth weight, the survival rate for <1,000 increased significantly from 39.0% in Period I to 72.5% in Period II (p=0.0005). Those for 1,000~1,499, 1,500~2,500, and ¡Ã2,500 showed tendency to improve over 2 periods, but with no statistical significance. According to gestation age, the survival rate for ¡Â28 weeks increased significantly from 54.9% in Period I to 74.6% in Period II (p=0.0064). Those for 29~32, 33~36, and ¡Ã37 weeks showed tendency to improve over 2 periods, but with no statistical significance.
Conclusion : Last 10 year period, the survival rate for NICU-admitted infants at Chungbuk National University Hospital improved significantly compared between two 5 year-periods. Especially the improvement of survival rate in extremely low birth weight infants (<1,000 g of birth weight) and extremely preterm infants (¡Â28 weeks of gestation age) made the most contribution to the improvement of overall survival rate in NICU admitted infants.
